Windows Nokia Lumia Icon Phone

FTC Disclosure: I received a Nokia Lumia Icon to use and review from Verizon Wireless. The device is on loan and will be return to Verizon Wireless when my reviews and work is complete. All views and opinions with regard to the products or company itself are my own and were not influenced, nor reviewed, by the company prior to posting.

Nokia Lumia, Lumia

For the last couple weeks my family and I have been testing out the Windows Nokia Lumia Icon Phone. It’s a pretty solid phone. At first glance out of the box you notice that this phone is heavier then some others, but it feels very solid. There is no cheap plastic on this phone, which makes that a positive selling point for me. It’s pretty solid rectangular in shape, however it does have a slight curve to both the back and front side. It’s a bit heavier then some other phones, weighing 5.86 ounces, but as I said above, it’s very sturdy and with sturdy comes a little weight.

Immediately when you turn the phone on you will notice the amazingly crisp screen. With a 1920×1080 screen, it’s not only vibrant for watching videos, Netflix and surfing the web, but it’s very easy on the eyes to view other things like Facebook, You Tube and other social media outlets. The screen size is 5.39 inches by 2.79 inches and just 0.39 inches thick.

Nokia Lumia Key Features

  • The Nokia Lumia is not the first Windows phone to hit the market. In fact this phone has a larger sibling. But the Lumia Icon does have some unique features that set it apart.
  • Capture HD Video with great audio thanks to Nokia PureView optics, four high performance mics and Nokia Rich Recording
  • Day or night capture sharp images with a 20mp camera, with single finger zoom your pictures come out better then ever.
  • Adjustable ISO, shutter speed, and white balance within the main camera application give you a level of control you don’t find on most smartphones.
  • With a 180 degree viewing angle you can view your phone in direct sunlight without too much glare or reflection.
  • 432 hours stand by time
  • 1058.4 minutes usage time
  • XLTE READY – Doubling Verizon’s 4G LTE bandwidth in cities coast to coast.
  • 2.2GHz Snapdragon 800 processor
  • 32 GB on board memory
  • Unique to Verizon Wireless

Photography With the Nokia Lumia Icon

Of course with a 20mp camera you can see visible difference in the photos. Below is a comparison from the Nokia Lumia Icon and the iPhone 5s.

Final Thoughts on the Nokia Lumia Icon

Nokia’s Icon is aesthetically clean. It’s sleek and comfortable to handle. I take issue with the physical button placement however. Everything is shoved on the right side of the phone (yes, I know that’s a Windows Phone thing, but it doesn’t make it any less awkward). The volume buttons are where you’d expect the power button to be, and the power button is in the middle of the body. The highlight here is the separate camera button, which is, the perfect addition for those who take pictures horizontally. The other concern I have with this phone (and I am thinking it’s just a Windows thing) is the apps. There is not nearly the mount of apps that your find on the iOS platform or the Android platform. The available apps do give you a wide range of things to chose from and the average user would probably be okay with the apps. The phone offers a few customization features on board, which is nice because you do not get that with the iPhone. Simple things like changing the color of your start up screen make a world of difference! Currently you can get the Nokia Lumia Icon for just $99.99 on a 2 year contract. The amount of features this phone has for the price point is perfect!

The image quality alone is enough to make you say I want it. I think I’d actually have to hold and try out the button placement for me its a matter of comfort along with style and usability.

Nice phone! I had a Nokia Windows phone and somehow my son swindled it out of me. He’s really enjoying it though.
